Car Bomb hits Baghdad: 112 people killed
on December 8th, 2009

bombblastIn quick succession four car bombs exploded in Baghdad on this morning killing at least 112 people and around 197 people are known to have been injured. Since August, this is the third multi-car bomb attack in the Iraqi capital all aimed at government buildings. The bombs went off at locations across the city and were powerful enough to shake buildings ten miles away.

Three of the bombings struck at the heart of the Iraqi capital, detonating a few minutes apart. One hit the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, while the others exploded in busy commercial districts — Nahdha and al-Qashla Square and the fifth bomb blew up outside the Karkh Civil Court in western Baghdad’s Mansour district.

One of today’s bomb is said to it has been mainly targeted near the Al-Nidaa mosque in north-eastern Baghdad and also near the Ministry of Interior and the first explosion was heard at 10.25am local time with the rest in quick succession.

Since the US-led invasion of 2003, violence across Iraq dropped dramatically last month, with the fewest deaths in attacks. But for the general election expected to take place in February Baghdad Government and the US military have warned regarding the threat of attacks.

The explosions were just a few hundred yards from Iraq’s Foreign Ministry which is still rebuilding after massive bombings there in August.
